ACADEMIA

      Music Theory

There are a variety of Music Theory classes offered at AMI, for all ages and levels of musicians. Classes include Music Theory for the Young Musician, Music Theory 101, Advanced Music Theory, and Music Theory for Adult Students. All private lesson students are strongly encouraged to attend a Music Theory class every semester. Music Theory classes offer students the chance to explore a component of music that is typically underdeveloped in private lessons due to lack of time. Depending on the level of class enrolled, Music Theory classes will explore a variety of theory related themes and subjects including note reading, rhythmic expressions, chords and pentatonic scales, the Circle of Fifths, composition and scoring, and musicianship and phrasing. Students will have the opportunity to relate the knowledge learned in these classes through their instruments throughout their private lesson discourse. Older students whom do not currently play an instrument are welcome to register for classes.

The following components are integrated throughout the curriculum of the Music Theory classes:

        • Clef, Key, and Time Signatures
        • Notation and Reading Comprehension
        • Rhythmic Expressions through Mathematical Reasoning
        • Chords and Scales
        • Circle of Fifths
        • Composition and Scoring

      Music Appreciation

Music Appreciation classes add an academic component to the education of all musicians.  Especially critical for high school students planning on taking musical discourse in college, the Music Appreciation classes explore the understanding of music on an academic level through the study of music history, integrated listening labs, and the study of music as related on a larger cultural level.  As there are various classes of different levels, students of all ages and backgrounds are welcome to register for a Music Appreciation class.  Additionally, student’s whom do not currently play an instrument are encouraged to take a Music Appreciation class in order to develop an understanding of music as a cultural art form.

The following components are integrated throughout the curriculum of the Music Theory classes:

        • Clef, Key, and Time Signatures
        • Notation and Reading Comprehension
        • Rhythmic Expressions through Mathematical Reasoning
        • Chords and Scales
        • Circle of Fifths
        • Composition and Scoring

Academic music classes are essential in the development of all young musicians. AMI offers Music Theory and Music History Academic Music Classes, and encourages all Private Lesson Students to enroll in both of them, rotating each semester.
