Why choose a group class?
Group classes are a great way for children to learn music, while being exposed to a social environment. Group classes are especially good for young children, as well as children in private lessons. Group classes are great for developing social skills, and make learning music fun by being able to share music-making with their peers. We strongly encourage all students taking private lessons to enroll in a Music Theory class or Music Appreciation class. These classes aid in further developing musical academia and knowledge.

Why is it important for my child to take academic music classes?

Academic music classes include music classes such as Music Theory and Music Appreciation. What is the difference between group classes & private lessons?

Private lessons and group classes are distinctively different. Private lessons have more flexibility; teachers develop the curriculum based on the individual student, and can cater to every students individual learning style. In contrast, group classes consist of multiple students, and teachers have a set curriculum. Private lessons are ideal for learning a specific instrument, while group classes are perfect for developing social skills, group playing abilities and academic learning.

Do you offer group classes for toddlers?
Yes, we do. Toddler Tunes is a great class for children ages 1 – 3 years old. It develops basic musical knowledge through spoken word, singing and piano exercises. Color and sound coordination is also developed in Toddler Tunes. Learning music young can help children develop better motor skills, cognitive learning and reading and math ability. Most children that take Toddler Tunes go on to enroll in private lessons and other group classes for instruments such as piano, violin and guitar – and advance more rapidly compared to children who did not take Toddler Tunes!

My child already takes a music class at school – why should they take one at American Music Institute?
Music classes at AMI are centered around a higher level of music education then most school general music classes. We create our curriculum to be a direct precursor for advanced musical skills. Additionally, our classes are substantially smaller, and will be able to accommodate every students individual learning process more effectively.

Are there any classes for families?
Learning music as a family is a wonderful way to get children interested in making music. We have several options to take part as a family. The most popular option is to take semi-private lessons. These are private lessons where you can have more then one student in the lesson – meaning the whole family can take a lesson together. This is recommended to learn elementary playing skills; developing advanced playing skills requires individual private lessons. Additionally, there are various classes that are open to all ages – meaning that both parents and children can take the class together.

Do group classes offer the same benefits as private lessons?
Group classes do not offer the same benefits of private lessons, but they offer different benefits. Private lessons allow students to learn at their own pace, with the teachers constructing individual curriculum for every student. They are also ideal for learning and developing sophisticated playing technique. Group classes help develop concrete social skills, as well as the skills necessary to play with other musicians. Group classes are also ideal for academic classroom settings for courses such as Music Theory and Music Appreciation.
