What classes are recommended to take in conjunction with private lessons?
Taking private lessons is fundamental in developing sophisticated playing skills and proper technique. However, group classes are also extremely important in receiving a comprehensive music education. For every student, the two most important classes to take are Music Theory & Music Appreciation. Private lessons typically focus on the specific instrument at hand – due to time constraints, lessons do not get to focus on in depth and general music education. Music Theory class is offered at various levels, and aids in the students understanding of music construction. Music Appreciation focuses on an academic approach to learning music, and includes listening labs and music history. Additionally, advanced students can also benefit from taking ensemble classes such as Advanced String Quartet, Piano Ensemble & Wind Ensemble.

Private lesson music teachers are extremely important for a child’s overall music education. Their development and attitude towards learning music depends on finding the right teacher. A private teacher should be both positive and well experienced on their given instrument. Teachers who do not, or have not, performed often on their given instrument should be avoided. Moreover, one of the most important aspects in choosing a private teacher is the students ability to communicate and feel comfortable with the teacher. It is also important to find a teacher who gives the student a lot to work on – and yet does not push them beyond their given capability. Progress for every student is at an individual rate – that is why private lessons are so great! Nevertheless, if the student is feeling completely overwhelmed – or is not progressing at all – a new private teacher may help the student develop more effectively. Lastly, private teachers are still teachers – there are times when they should push the student, and times when they should know when not to.

The answer to this question depends on every child. Typically, children as young as three years old can start on private piano lessons. Children as young as FAQ or 5 can start on string instruments such as violin, viola, cello or guitar. Wind and brass instruments take mature breath support, and therefore 8 – 10 years old is the ideal age. If your child is around 3 years old, and you envision them to start an instrument in the next few years, it is suggested to start them on piano and eventually move them to the other instrument when they are older. This gives them a great background in musical ability and knowledge, and will help them excel tremendously on the instrument they will eventually play. Toddlers can also benefit from being exposed to general music classes – the younger the better. This way, when they start their given instrument, they are already comfortable with identifying sounds, musical notation and expressing themselves through music.

Yes! Adult private lessons are very popular. A great way to facilitate your child’s musical education is to learn an instrument as well. It is a wonderful hobby – many of our adult students go on to play in community orchestras and bands, or just for fun as a recreational hobby. Contact us to learn more about booking a private lesson.
